The renewed main transmission system for electrical energy in the Southwest, will continue to rely on on transmission lines, while some areas will require underground cables – thereby reducing the visual impacts of the project. Underground cables are not an option in the main transport system, although their use can be considered in a few places; in transmission routes or parts of routes with less transmission capabilities and that are not a part of the main system, and in individual connections to the system.
The project will include underground cables being laid down:
- From Hverahlid power plant to a substation on Hellisheidi heath. Simultaneously the line Sogslina 2 will be removed.
- From Hrauntungur to Hamranes. Simultaneously the Hamranes lines will be removed from Geithals to Hamranes in Hafnarfjordur.
- From Fitjar to Helguvik, due to the construction of the Helguvik power plant.
- To prospective server farms in Reykjanesbaer and Sandgerdi towns.

Typical plan for a 220 kV underground cable, with one conductor in a phase.
