A renewal of the energy transmission system is a major premise for industrial development in the area, including an increase in power-intensive industry, such as production and the high tech industry.

Construction of Nordural's aluminium plant in Helguvik has begun and the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium plant in Straumsvik is working on an augmentation in production. There are plans for server farms on Keflavik Airport as well as in Sandgerdi and Hafnarfjordur, and an environmental impact assessment has been done for a possible silicon factory in Helguvik. All these projects would create a number of jobs in the area, generating income for the community.

For example, if the line Sudurnesjalína 1 were to become temporarily out of order, there would be real danger of electrical disturbances and even power-outages in the Reykjanes peninsula. Hitaveita Sudurnesja would then be unable to meet its commitments towards energy buyers outside the area. A renewal of the transmission system will increase the security of deliverance as well as increasing the energy transport capability for future use.
More power
