The Southwest Lines project is intended to renovate and strengthen the energy transmission system in the Southwest of Iceland, from Hellisheidi heath throughout the Reykjanes peninsula, passing through both Geithals and the town of Hafnarfjordur on the way.
Preparation began in 2005, directly involving 12 municipalities in the Southwest of Iceland and the majority of the Icelandic people.
The renewal is urgent, since the current system will not meet foreseeable transmission demands in the area. By the end of the project, the transmission system will be able to provide enough electrical power for decades to come.
